The Sparrow - Lawrence Arabia The wealth of great New Zealand musical talent knows no bounds.
It's a Sunday morning not a usual listening time for me, I'm more a late night listener or sometimes afternoons but it's a 'not tired so up really early type of day' make coffee and put on a CD. I've heard bits of Lawrence Arabia's music here and there in an advert? Nat Radio, shop background music... This is a short EP really but what a listen; it's mellow. Beautifully structured melodies, instrumentation that evokes the past, 60's pop, jazz, big bands swing, wow this is a very fine album and it gets better with every listen. Is it a concept album? it takes me on a journey, through musical styles and evokes visited countries from the my past, tells a story of it's own, it could be a soundtrack. And then it's finished with strings, a mournful parting with a promise.

Frank Black - The Cult of Ray Sometimes it's just nice to record what takes your fancy musically...and if anyone else cares or is interested well that's great!
Like many I really liked The Pixies, definitely an influential and original band, Black Francis was the main creative but with substantial talents on bass, drums and lead guitar, I believe there was a reunion recently as is often the case nowadays; any way I picked up a copy of Frank Black's "The Cult of Ray", it really is a fine work, catchy, rocking, melodic...great lyrics with some of his usual (and Unusual) thoughts and ideas about all sorts of things. Frank Black is definitely a one off, quirky and talented in the best possible way. And I just love this album. |
AuthorLike many I have a love of music, I listen to music all the time, but mostly in a quiet space; I don't like to have music while I work and don't have a set of headphones on all the time. I can't work like that, The love of audio devices followed as the search for quality, in it's many forms, became an interesting enigmatic pursuit. Finding "quality" turns out to be more difficult than expected due a large subjective element in judging quality. The devices, design, finish and audio results, are marvels and are often works of art; they require investigation and I have an admiration for the designers and manufactures as they vie for our attention, in many cases they are also seeking a kind of perfection.
