Bowers & Wilkins DM/4
B & W DM/4
Here's a pair of classic English speakers. When working properly they sound fantastic; these have had a bit of a hard life, these are "before" images, there may be a while to wait for the "afters". One of the Coles' tweeters is ruined, the plastic dome has shattered, I'm sure the crossover capacitors will need replacing and the cabinet needs quite a bit of work but they are complete and definitely worth restoring...keep an eye out for the finished product.
Update: the Coles' tweeter has been replaced with same from stock, the crossovers are fine and working properly...they have very good quality polypropylene capacitors not electrolytics. I have these playing and they sound fantastic!! clean, detailed, plenty of well controlled bass, not boomy at all, lovely smooth mid-range and clear highs. But not as efficient as... other English speakers of the same age? I drive these with 75 watt MOSFET amp (McLaren) and they really sound great, some of the B&W spec sheets suggest they are quite efficient but they do require the volume pot turned well up on some smaller amps I have tried. Update: strangely they work well with a ten watt valve amplifier and produce decent volume, sound wise the combination is sublime and now my go-to setup! Never would have guessed and I just tried it out on a whim one day - what a surprise...and a mystery. © Stanton Mullard 2013
