A superb CD player by any standard let alone one from 1987. Legendary TD1541 DAC and CD 1 mechanism. These are really well made with a cast zinc alloy chassis and top quality components, it's full of Elna capacitors including a lot of Cerafine's. This was a state-of-the-art player at the time with a no compromise build policy... so far as I can tell. Of course it was also expensive at the time.
They will usually need the four rubber belts that operate the transport tray replacing, not too difficult but getting the correct size belts can be a bit tricky; try "rubber" seals - O-rings, you will probably need a specialist store (Seal Innovations Ltd?) the most suitable may not actually be real rubber...silicon or EPDM or some other may be better and/or available in correct sizes and profiles. The original belts are square profile but I have sourced round profile belts that work very well. Also clean off dust and dirt if any and put a very small amount of oil on the metal rail on the left hand side that the CD tray slides on it has bronze bearings and will improve the tray opening speed and smoothness.
These players are extremely reliable and sound fantastic even by modern standards and with a little TLC will be hard to beat as far as sound "quality" is concerned. I've had the opportunity to listen and compare this player to more modern and some very high end players, the Philips did not disappoint, not only that it beat any player I compared it too including several costing many thousands of dollars! this is not only my opinion, I've seen many rave reviews; Why? who knows!!
