Another good quality New Zealand made valve amplifier, made by John Gilbert & Co. ltd. Auckland. These use the ECL82/6BM8 valves that are the predecessor of the ECL86. They are a double valve, a triode and a Pentode in the same glass envelope, capable of perhaps 8 watts in push pull as these amplifiers are. I replaced all the old Ducon polyester capacitors that were on the board as they were bent and discoloured. The valves are ones that came with the amplifier and don't all match. Despite that it sounds very good and the power is ample, very clean and sweet...more to come as I will try better valves and see how/if the sound changes. There is a little more "restoration" I want to do but I won't be modding it, it already sounds very good and with matching valves and a few more aged components replaced it should sound excellent. As usual I have simply screwed the speaker binding posts into the place where the ordinary screws were, no rewiring or removal of the old connectors was necessary, the old screws can be put back at any time. Here's a link to the schematic and user manual on the NZVRS (New Zealand Vintage Radio Society).
