Why create this section on the website? Well I just wanted to post a few combination/trials that have more to do with sound and operation rather than individual items and repair. I've had the AWA speakers for years and not used them for a long time, I remember them as too good to get rid of far, far too good to use as "sacrificial" test speakers. I also wanted to test the Luxman... so why not combine the two, well here goes; the source is a Sony CD player and a Thorens Turntable.
The Luxman is a work in progress; I have repaired it and it works well but will most likely get a full recap and other work. I say it works well, it sounds sublime, I always knew about and understood the sound quality of Luxman; in 1987 I wanted an amplifier to bring back to NZ with me I compared a number of amps in the hifi store (a specialist store with mid to high end only) at my budget it came down to the Marantz 1060 or Luxman L? ... the Marantz won, it was cheaper as it was on sale, end of line, and I couldn't tell the difference between them, they both beat a half dozen or so of the most popular Japanese and European amps including much more expensive models. I had barely heard of either Marantz or Luxman, at the time I was expecting to bring home a Pioneer, Sansui or Akai perhaps as those were the well know ones (Quad, Leak etc. well over budget!)
The speakers are tiny (150mm x 250mm x 125mm - 6" x 10" x 5") AWA FX 60 with very high quality Coral bass/mid-range (4L-60) and Motorola Piezo tweeters. They have surprising bass for their size but really need a bigger cabinet, and ported perhaps, as the drivers really can go lower according to the specs. I often wondered if the tweeters were up to the same standard as the woofers... there is mixed opinion regarding piezo units, I may well try other tweeters but the piezo's do seem OK. They also have a full crossover in them made with good quality components; it has been said that no crossover is needed with the piezo units as they have such high impedance (they would definitely work OK and should not be destroyed) but they won't sound their best without the full crossover. Regarding their small size, I'm sure they were designed as either tiny bookshelf speakers for a small space or perhaps as rear speakers for the then current quadraphonic craze (CD4 & SQ etc.) that never really took off. AWA made much bigger, multi way speakers some of which are of very good quality.
